Splitting Bills & Merging Tables
Split a table’s bill by item into named sub-bills, settle each one separately, move and merge tables, and issue transfer slips.
A table's bill can be split two ways. Evenly divides the total by however many ways the table asks for. By items creates named sub-bills and lets you tap each item onto the person who ordered it — each sub-bill then settles separately, with its own payment method. Tables can also be moved and merged, with a transfer slip recording the move.

Sub-bills are real bills
A sub-bill created “by items” owns its items. It settles on its own, takes its own payment method, and prints its own receipt. That is what lets one person pay by card while another pays cash, without the till having to reconcile them by hand.
Common Tasks
How to Split a Bill by Items (separate bills, everyone pays their own, itemised split)
Create named sub-bills and assign each item to one.
Required permission: Restaurant POS
- Open the table in the restaurant POS
- Choose to split the bill and select By items
- Create a sub-bill per payer and name it — a guest name or seat number both work
- Tap each item to assign it to a sub-bill
- Check nothing is left unassigned
- Settle each sub-bill in turn, taking its own payment
Result: Each sub-bill is paid separately with its own method and receipt, and the table closes when all are settled.
Note: Name the sub-bills something the table will recognise when you read it back. Bill 1 and Bill 2 cause confusion at exactly the moment you want none.
How to Split a Bill Evenly (split equally, divide the bill, split three ways)
Divide the total without assigning items.
- Open the table in the restaurant POS
- Choose to split the bill and select Evenly
- Set how many ways to split it
- Take each payment in turn
Result: The total is divided equally and each share is settled separately.
How to Move a Table (change table, guests moved, transfer table)
Move a running session to a different table.
Required permission: Restaurant POS
- Open the table in the restaurant POS
- Choose to move it and select the destination table
- Confirm
Result: The session, its items and its bills move to the new table. A transfer slip records the move.
Note: Move the session rather than reopening on the new table. Reopening leaves the original items stranded on a table nobody is sitting at.
How to Merge Two Tables (join tables, combine bills, merge sessions)
Combine two sessions when groups join up.
Required permission: Restaurant POS
- Open one of the tables in the restaurant POS
- Choose to merge and select the other table
- Confirm
Result: The two sessions become one, with all items on a single table's bill.
Note: Merge before settling anything. Merging a table where part of the bill has already been paid makes the remaining balance hard to read.
How to Release a Table (free the table, clear table, release session)
Return a table to available once the guests have gone.
- Open the table in the restaurant POS
- Release it
Result: The table shows as available on the floor plan.
Note: A table left occupied after guests leave is the most common reason a floor plan stops matching the room.
Troubleshooting
The bill will not split
Cause: Part of it may already be settled, or items are still unassigned.
Fix: If you see Failed to split the bill, check whether a payment has already been taken against the table. Split before settling anything.
Some items are on no sub-bill
Cause: They were never assigned during the split.
Fix: Review the split before settling — any unassigned item will not be paid for, and the table will close short.
A guest wants to pay for someone else
Cause: Sub-bills are assigned by item, not by person.
Fix: Move the items onto the paying guest’s sub-bill before settling. The sub-bill is whatever set of items you put on it.
Guests moved table and their order was lost
Cause: A new session was opened rather than the existing one moved.
Fix: Use the move action so the session travels with them. If a second session was already opened, merge the two.
A guest wants to split from their own phone
Cause: That is the consumer app rather than the till.
Fix: Guests in a table session can split and pay their own share from their phone — see Consumer PWA.
